In class, we each used the computer, not saying anything is wrong with that fact because i believe technology is a great thing. But it does take up alot of energy, especially a whole school working with computers. The energy used just to make the computers run is crazy and should seriously be cut down. Thing is....how do you tell a whole new younger generation to slow down on the advancing technology that's shaping our new way of life? You could say "hey your computer...it's killing our enviornment" but most likely it won't stop because we are accustom to it. Another thing, on our break there are vending machines full of plastic bottles.... aren't we suppose to be cutting down on plastic. From the vending soda machines to the store, we as students use plastic bottles like mad people. Of course, no one really think about the damage but wouldn't it be a little smarter to use a friendly to the enviornment bottle that you could refill at home. Not only would you and me be doing a small part in caring to our world but also saving alot of money.
I honestly can't say i do alot to care for my enviornment, but i do little steps like i don't litter, don't drive, i'm more on the organic side. I try not to use plastic much.... i'm going to get one of those cups like the professor.... because who don't want to save money:) If i do get a car it will be a hybrid but i'm still in the baby stages of changing my habits.
My very most concern for our world would have to be pollution, we are the leading cause for pollution in the world right now. Pollution is one of the major issues that we need to take serious, it's bad on our enviornment and very bad to our health.

I'm totally in your side. Computers and vending machines are killing environment. However, who are able to live without computers? We have to think about it!! Darn it! What makes the blog work? Computers......

I guess the answer is, as Nina pointed out, not to be a thoughtless consumer and to require that the energy we consume does not come from sources that pollute--sure, it will cost us $$, but since we're using our hard-earned money to save bankers from bankruptcy, we might as well use it to have breathable air, no?

I have to disagree. For one computers the chips and transistors in computers can be and are recycled. Furthermore, the efficiancy of computers actualy aid our environment. Think about the amount of treees that are being saved by transactions being done over the internet. Think about the amount of gas that is being kpt out of our ozone layer with online shopping, banking, ect. Computers are a catalyst of a greener America.

The government bailout of Bear Sterns was not about wasting money, it was about saving it. If our financial intermediaries go down it would cause a ripple affect that will hurt the economy and make less money available for your proposed programs. The bear sterns situation can be compared to the economy being cut in an artery. The Fed simply applied a band-aid, for the sake of Americas well-being. Ans as all new technology, the technology leading towards a greener future will be adapted as it becomes more practicle and cost effective. When computers came out in the 60's consumers didn't flock to these highly inefficient ridiculusly expensive machines. The Price of a Hybrid car for example, is well higher for comparable models and they have a waiting listt. When greener technology like this is mass produced efficiently it will be bought. You have nothing to worry about ;)

Hey, I enjoyed reading your blog. You are very honest like me in admitting that you don't do enough to help the environment. Like you, I am probably going to get a bottle like our teacher to carry water in so that I don't have to repeatedly buy water in plastic bottles. If you haven't started reading "The Green Book", take a peak at it. You may find not only things you can do that will help the environment, but things you already do that you didn't realized helped.

I understand your concern about our dependance on technology. It's quite sad how we neglect doing outdoor activities and even socializing because we're on the web so much, myspacing, school work, facbook, shopping! etc.

But at the same time if we are are so advance in our technology, and there is a huge problem with the world loosing trees due to our excessive use of paper! -( paper which we waste most of the time... ) We should consider submitting our papers, essays and such. online. Exams as well, think about it, what happens with most of our HW's, tests etc. sure sometimes we'll keep a real good essay we got an A on! but honestley we dont really keep these documents forever...

This class is pretty cool because we're doing everything on the computer, i'm going to go through
countless notebooks, taking notes etc. for my other classes that eventually will be thrown away.....

Cool blog... i too am in my baby steps of going green... so I can totally relate!

Stephanie I feel you computers do use a lot of energy. Only if the could make hybrid computers like cars. But at least some computers parts are recycle. I agree pollution is a serious problem.
